Can you help with my particular issue?

I specialise in treating weight loss, anxiety and stopping smoking.

Although I regularly help clients with a number of different conditions, including: phobias, pain management, overcoming insomnia, OCD, panic attacks, habit-breaking, snoring and self-confidence.

How much does it cost?

For most issues, it is £70 per session. For smoking cessation, treatment costs £120. The treatment price for any session includes your own hypnosis recording either on CD or MP3.

For smoking cessation, this treatment cost also includes a top-up session that you can use anytime following your initial smoking cessation session.

How long do sessions last?

Sessions generally last for one hour. For smoking cessation, the session lasts 2 hours.

Where is it?

I practise in two locations - Glasgow City Centre and Glasgow's West End.

In the City Centre, I practise at The Glasgow Therapy Centre on the 1st floor of 34 West George Street.

In the West End, I practise at The Complementary Medicine Centre, on the basement level of 11 Park Circus.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on your goals. Smoking cessation has been developed into a one session technique - although for some people, this may vary. For other issues, you may decide that one session is sufficient. But, depending on your goals, we may decide together that more sessions would benefit you. Hypnotherapy can be conducted over three sessions for most issues.

Is there a cancellation charge?

If you need to reschedule or cancel an arranged appointment and give me more than 24 hours notice, there is no cancellation charge.  If you cancel less than 24 hours before your arranged appointment time, a £20 cancellation charge may be applicable.  This is because I will have already paid for room rental for your appointment time.

Will you be in control of me?

No. In the sessions, you remain completely in control throughout - you could get up and walk away if you felt like it during a session - but you should feel relaxed enough to not bother! If you cannot imagine reaching your goal without outside help at the moment, that's when hypnotherapy can help. I help you to reach your goal until you feel comfortable with your new changes and are able to act freely without my help.

What happens in the first session?

In the first session, we talk about what this problem is preventing you from doing and how that makes you feel. I find out about what you want instead and why you really want to change in this way. We end this first session with hypnotherapy using techniques which will be most helpful for you personally. I will also teach you self-hypnosis so that you can continue to practise these techniques at home to strengthen the work of the session.

How does it work?

Unlike traditional counselling, the hypnotherapy part of the session involves me speaking and you normally have your eyes closed during hypnosis so that you can relax more. I help you to notice how you are breathing and sitting in the chair. This is all done to help you switch off from the outside world. This is so important in hypnotherapy because it may free you from restrictive thoughts or feelings. And this makes it a lot easier to reach your goal.

As well as this, it is a lot easier to remember the information from the session when your body and mind are relaxed - it can reach you on a deeper level. This may make change happen quicker.

How do you treat insomnia?

By teaching you how to block out unnecessary distractions and thoughts when you are ready to go to sleep. I also look at your routine - are you taking time to rest in the evenings, especially? Are you relaxed during the daytime, or could you make changes there?

How do you treat phobias?

Phobias are treated similarly regardless of what you feel fearful of. Hypnotherapy for phobias works to change your fearful response to the object/situation from fear to feeling calm and relaxed. Sometimes the phobia is so strong that you cannot even think about or imagine the fearful situation. In those cases, we use special techniques to help you feel more distanced from the situation until you feel able to relax enough to imagine it.

How do you treat stopping smoking?

Stopping smoking is a one session treatment. Before meeting you in person, I will ask you on the phone how ready you are to stop smoking. You need to feel more than 50% ready to stop smoking for the hypnotherapy to be effective. The hypnotherapy for stopping smoking focuses on taking away the desire to smoke, increasing your awareness so that you can break the habit easily and focusing on your goals so that you feel really good about stopping.

How do you treat pain?

Pain management is dealt with in a variety of ways with hypnotherapy. Primarily your perception of the pain is dealt with. We can use techniques to help you to perceive the pain as easier to manage, to focus elsewhere other than the discomfort and to feel more in control of your body.

How do you treat weight control?

Weight control is the area I specialise in.  I am one of only 12 HypnoBand practitioners in Glasgow.  The HypnoBand treatment takes place over 4 sessions.  You can read more about it here. Whether you decide to go with HypnoBand or not, with any weight loss hypnotherapy we first of all look at the possible underlying causes preventing you from losing weight.                                                                                                                                  We decide together on ways to satisfy those needs in healthier ways.  Hypnotherapy for weight loss is not a diet.  We are looking for long-lasting changes here.  We use hypnosis to reinforce what you want to happen.  In my experience too, it is often really important to help you begin to feel better about yourself, more confident and self-assured so that you have a continuing reason to lose weight.                                                                                           In hypnosis, you are taught how to shun those unhealthy foods and how to enjoy and look forward to those healthy foods. At all times in the sessions, we focus on how good you will look and feel - this may help you to build momentum and feel more empowered towards your goal weight. We do also look at how you feel emotionally when you eat as well. This is to encourage you to make healthy future choices between how you feel and how you act.

Is it the same as stage hypnosis?

Not quite. In stage hypnosis, the participants are often in trance. But the difference with hypnotherapy is that the process is monitored and full support is given. It is impossible to remain in trance for days because hypnosis is rather like daydreaming - just with your eyes closed and a bit more relaxed.

In fact, everyone experiences light hypnosis every day - when you are in a taxi, on the bus or watching the television and you are not completely aware of what is going on around you - you are in a light hypnotic trance. The difference with hypnotherapy is that whilst you are in a trance you are directed towards your own goals.

Do you work with children?

Yes ,I work with children from the age of 6 upwards. I do not work with children younger than 6 because younger children do not generally have the reasoning capacities necessary for hypnotherapy to be effective.

Will I be asleep in the session?

You might feel so relaxed during the session that you fall asleep, yes! This is fine though, as the suggestions I give to you during the session are still processed by your unconscious mind whilst you sleep. In any case, your personalised CD/MP3 is really important. You can use this at home every day - so if you fall asleep in the session, you can still enjoy the CD as often as you like at home!
